Hikvision DVR Compatible Cameras: TVI, AHD and CVI
Which cameras a Hikvision Turbo HD DVR takes, how resolution limits recording and which models mix old and new coax cameras.

Yes, in most cases: a current Hikvision Turbo HD DVR records HD-TVI cameras and analogue (CVBS) cameras, and the nine recorders in the table below also take AHD and CVI. So a mix of old and new coax cameras can share one recorder. The limit that matters is resolution: each recorder has its own maximum recording resolution, listed in the table. Other makes and older Hikvision models can differ, so check the recorder's datasheet on Hikvision's DS-7208HGHI-M1 page or the iDS-7208HQHI-M1/XT page before you buy.
Which Hikvision DVRs take which cameras
Every recorder below lists HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS and IP inputs in its product data. The last column is the highest resolution it records.
| Recorder | Channels | Camera inputs | Records up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| DS-7204HGHI-M1 | 4 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 1080p Lite |
| iDS-7204HQHI-M1/XT | 4 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 5MP Lite (3K) |
| iDS-7204HUHI-M1/XT | 4 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 8MP |
| DS-7208HGHI-M1 | 8 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 1080p Lite |
| iDS-7208HQHI-M1/XT | 8 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 5MP Lite (3K) |
| iDS-7208HUHI-M1/XT | 8 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 8MP |
| DS-7216HGHI-M1 | 16 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 1080p Lite |
| iDS-7216HQHI-M1/XT | 16 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 5MP Lite (3K) |
| iDS-7216HUHI-M2/XT | 16 | HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS, IP | 8MP |
Choose by your cameras. For 8MP recording, pick a recorder whose last column says 8MP, such as the iDS-7208HUHI-M1/XT.

Old analogue cameras on a new Hikvision DVR
Older analogue cameras use the same BNC coax connection, so they plug into the same numbered inputs as newer ones. Standard analogue (CVBS) is one of the listed inputs on every recorder above. An old camera keeps its old picture quality, so replace the ones that cover doors and gates first, and leave the rest until later.
Things to check before you buy
- Audio: a camera with a built-in microphone sends sound along the coax. Only use that with a recorder that supports audio over coax, as the DS-7208HGHI-M1 does; check the datasheet for the others.
- Power: the DS-7204HUHI-K1/P transmits both HDTVI video and power over the same coaxial cable. The recorders in the table are not listed as PoC.
- Channels: count your camera cables and pick a recorder with at least that many channels.
- Model number: if a camera's model is printed on its label, search for it against the recorder's datasheet.
Replacing the recorder as well
If the old recorder has failed, our guide to replacing a Hikvision DVR by channel count shows the 4, 8 and 16 channel matches. See all recorders in the DVR collection. Live prices and delivery are on each product page.
